Layla and I took Frisky out to Kickapoo State Park, IL, on this beautiful Saturday, March 23, 2002.

Kickapoo was a coal mine around 1900, so it's got some nice topography from the old tailing piles and pits. The Vermillion river runs through it.

The bed of the Vermillion river has patches of a very dense, non-water-soluable clay or shale, pictured in 16 and 17. I believe this shale forms the bedrock of the area, but it could also just be a deposit from the river. The Vermillion is strikingly green (hence the name), similar to a glacier-fed river.
