So we've got an old gold mine out behind our house. It's theoretically connected to the road system, but there's an iron gate across the entrance road. Layla and I (and our neighbors) hike back there fairly regularly, but we usually don't go very far. I was suprised to discover on hiking further back in that there are an amazing density of critter tracks--moose, bunny, and maybe even a lone wolf--but no people tracks at all!

The beautiful emptiness of Alaska still amazes me, even though I've been here for years.
